SSE Airtricity has announced that it will increase prices for a second time this year. The supplier has announced standard variable electricity prices will rise by 9.5% from 20th October 2025. Standing Charges will also increase by 9.5%.
The change will add around €151 a year to the typical household electricity bill and will affect hundreds of thousands of homes across Ireland.
It’s another unwelcome development for households already dealing with persistently high energy costs.
What prices are changing?
SSE Airtricity has announced it will increase electricity prices and standing charges from 20th October 2025.
From 20th October 2025:
-
Electricity prices will rise by 9.5%
-
A typical household will pay about €151 more per year
-
No change to gas prices – this announcement only impacts electricity tariffs
- Smart and Time of Use – rates for Smart tariffs will also increase. For example, Day rates to increase by 10%, Night rates by 12% and Peak rates by 2%
SSE Airtricity is one of the largest energy suppliers in Ireland, with over 460,000 electricity customers, so this increase will be widely felt.
Why are prices going up?
SSE Airtricity has said that the increase is due to higher network charges – the regulated costs of operating and maintaining the national electricity grid.
These charges are regulated by the CRU and apply to all suppliers – not just Flogas. These are the costs associated with delivering electricity to homes and businesses and are agreed by the CRU
SSE is not alone in raising prices. Other suppliers, including Energia, Pinergy and Bord Gáis Energy, have also announced increases in recent weeks, citing the same pressures.
Another rise for customers
This is not the first time SSE has increased prices this year. The supplier’s hiked electricity prices by 10.5% and gas prices by 8.4% in April.
Taken together, these changes mean a typical household will now be paying several hundred euro more per year compared to the start of 2025.
