The latest figures from the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU) reveal a significant rise in energy supplier switching among households in Ireland. With electricity and gas prices still a concern for many, more people are making the switch to find better deals and cut down on costs.
Switching on the rise
According to the CRU’s January 2025 Change of Supplier Report, a total of 33,932 electricity customers switched providers during the month. This marks a 24.75% increase from December 2024 and a notable 34.18% jump compared to January 2024.
Gas customers are also on the move, with 11,053 consumers switching gas suppliers—a 29.93% increase month-on-month and 8.70% rise compared to last year. This spike in switching suggests that more households are shopping around to find the best energy deals available.
What savings are available by switching?
Although energy prices have fallen since their peak, electricity and gas bills remain high in historical terms. Over recent months suppliers have reduced some discount offers and increased prices as they have faced hikes in yearly network charges and wholesale energy prices.
However, there is still competition in the market, strong discounts and offers that would save money…and the increase in switching would suggest people are becoming more aware of savings in the energy market. A typical household could save up to…
-
€481 on electricity
-
€306 on gas
-
€763 on dual fuel bills
Despite these savings, many people do not switch or do not switch on a regular basis i.e. every year.
Is it easy to compare energy deals?
Yes, especially when you use Power to Switch. Simply enter a few details on how much you currently spend on electricity (or how much you use) – an old bill or statement can help. If you don’t have these details you can still compare deals for your home based on an average usage figure (4,200kWh for electricity and 11,000kWh for gas).
We will check all suppliers to identify the best deals available – as well as savings there is information on the energy supplier, any cashback or bonus offers and tariff terms & conditions.
Finding a better deal
At Power to Switch we compare all tariffs and deals across all energy suppliers to save you money. Switching is quick, hassle-free and means you keep more money in your pocket. You don’t even have to tell your old supplier you are leaving.
