So summer has arrived…and as we wait (and wait) for the sun to appear energy bills are likely to be the last thing on your mind. However, now is a great time to switch supplier so you are already saving before the longer evenings roll around again. And the fact is if you have never switched or its been a while you’re probably paying more than you need to for your home electricity.
On average people using Power to Switch find savings of £150 off their electricity bills
But as well as switching its important to make sure your home is energy efficient. If you are not heating your home efficiently or your home is losing a lot of heat its still going to cost you.
A typical home could save up to £250-£300 a year by being more energy efficient
Support is available to help with the cost of making your home more energy efficient. The Northern Ireland Sustainable Energy Programme (NISEP for short) provides help to install energy saving measures in your home. This can be energy-efficient boilers, heating controls, loft insulation and cavity wall insulation. Many of the schemes cover the full cost of the energy efficiency measure meaning it will often be free.
There is a set pot of money each year so its important to check schemes are still available (and apply early!).
Each scheme has its own eligibility criteria and a range of measures are usually available. The current programme will run until March 2018 (if the funding is not used up before). So visit our NISEP page to see all current schemes, who is eligible and how to apply. If your are interested in applying for any of these schemes contact the energy company administering the scheme directly.
Getting energy efficiency measures installed now will mean both a cosier home and lower bills for the winter.
