Bord Gáis Energy has announced that it will increase electricity and gas prices for customers from 9th October 2026.
The changes will see a typical household’s electricity bill increase by 8.8%, while the typical gas bill will rise by 9.3%. For customers taking both electricity and gas from Bord Gáis Energy, the combined impact will be add around €317 a year to the average dual fuel bill.
The increase will affect one of Ireland’s largest energy customer bases, with Bord Gáis Energy supplying around 300,000 gas customers and more than 400,000 electricity customers. It’s another unwelcome increase for households as we head towards the colder months and follows price rises announced by a number of other energy suppliers during 2026.
What does the price change mean?
From 9th October 2026:
- A typical electricity bill will increase by 8.8%, adding around €177 a year
- A typical gas bill will increase by 9.3%, adding around €140 a year
- A typical dual fuel household will pay around €317 more each year
- Electricity standing charges will increase by 7.2%
- Gas standing charges will increase by 7%
For a typical dual fuel household, that works out at around €26 extra per month.
The actual impact on individual households will depend on how much electricity and gas they use and the tariff and discount they are currently on. Customers who currently receive a contract discount will keep the same percentage discount for the remainder of their contract, but it will be applied to the new higher prices.
Why prices are changing?
Bord Gáis Energy says the increase reflects a combination of higher network charges, continued volatility in wholesale energy markets and wider inflationary pressures.
Bord Gáis Energy is the latest supplier to announce higher prices, following increases from SSE Airtricity, Pinergy, Flogas, Yuno Energy and Electric Ireland during recent months.
Another reason to check your energy deal
The latest increase is another reminder of how quickly the energy market can change.
If you are a Bord Gáis Energy customer, the price increase does not necessarily mean you have to simply accept a higher bill. There continue to be different discounts, tariffs and offers available across the market, and switching supplier can significantly reduce what you pay.
Customers affected by the price change also have the right to end their Bord Gáis Energy contract (without an exit fee) within 30 days of the price-change notification.
